Alexa Jones crowned Miss California Teen USA 2012

Miss Orange County USA has swapped crowns. She was crowned Miss California Teen USA 2012 Sunday afternoon in Indian Wells.

She made it to the top among more than 100 contestants, believed to be the highest number to ever compete at the state pageant.

Her next step is to represent California at the Miss Teen USA 2012 pageant. The event is ordinarily held during the summer in the Bahamas.

Jones, 18, was graduated early from high school and entered college at age 17 as a communications major.

Her victory is bittersweet. In December, her father was killed in an accident and she fought grief in recent weeks as she successfully competed for the title.

"She has been recognized for her outstanding leadership and academic achievement as the recipient of multiple scholarship awards," according to the Miss Orange County Teen Regional 2012 website. "In addition she has earned the President Volunteer Service Award-Gold for her work with community and charitable organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Children’s Hospital and Muscular Dystrophy Association. She has served as a four-year member and Captain of the Varsity Cheer team at Ramona High School."
