For fans of West Indian Girl, Primal Scream, and The Veils.
Alex Walker, who was recently seen tearing it up on bass guitar with The Commitments front man and six-stringer, Alex Strong, has released four tracks across three digital albums available for free download at Lapdance Academy.
"Sacrifice" is a spiraling track of bass heavy, guitar & key ambience backed by some muted beats and fronted by some ethereal vocal work.
"Caught Starin" is a much more layered work, featuring sinister intro guitars over a driving electronic beat. There's an element of Nine Inch Nails or even Leaether Strip, but it certainly concentrates a bit more on live instrumentation and less on loud raging. It's a subtle menace with echoing guitars and forcibly subdued emotion, giving it a cagey quality.
Meanwhile, "Trust The Fire" is a bit more uptempo, but equally experimental. Sounding not a bit unlike West Indian Girl, it's a trippy rock tune with psychedelic guitar work, a chorus of vocals that's never too far up front, and some groovy bass lines and beats that'll have you moving while you space out with the band. More powerful solo vocals come in at various parts in the midsection of the song, along with more heavily distorted guitar work to add a little rock groove to the mix.
"White Gown" has a haunting tension throughout, being composed of a rolling guitar riff and bass line, broken only by purposely uncomfortable vocals and a couple short sections of staccato drum beats. Disturbing and uneasy, it's effective in building a creepy atmosphere, though the ending comes much to soon, leaving a bit too much to the imagination.
Overall, Walker proves to be both consistent in sound, while experimental in mood and atmospherics. Moving from this sort of alternative, trippy rock to play with someone like Andrew Strong -- a virtuoso of blues rock -- proves that there's a lot of depth and creativity to Alex's talent, and ensures that his sound won't be pigeonholed to one genre or style.
