Alex Smith trade rumors have finally resulted in something. The San Francisco 49ers will trade Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs. According to a report from ESPN on Wednesday (Feb. 27), the Chiefs will send its second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft as well as a mid-round 2014 pick to acquire Smith.
The 49ers will get the No. 34 pick in the 2013 NFL draft order out of this, nearly guaranteeing another college star coming to the team. Getting two picks like this for a quarterback that wasn't going to see any time is a really good move for the 49ers. Add to it the fact that they get out of the salary for Smith and it seems like a real winning deal for the franchise.
Kansas City will become responsible for the $8.5 million in salary that Smith is due for the 2013 NFL season, but if he can help turn that team around, it might end up being a huge bargain. Giving up such a high pick in the upcoming draft is risky, though, so fans will expect a lot out of Smith as soon as he arrives at training camp.
The Alex Smith trade has been agreed to in principle by the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs, likely meaning that Matt Cassel is also very close to get released to free agency.
