Add hockey superstar Alex Ovechkin to the list of couplings with tennis stars. On Monday, the Washington Capitals player announced his engagement to Russian tennis star Maria Kirilenko.
"We are engaged !!!!!!! ))))))))," Wrote @Ovi8.
The news came via twitter from Ovechkin, 27, who has been dating Kirilenko, 25, for over a year. He also tweeted a picture of himself and Kirilenko on skates, holding hockey sticks.
Kirilenko, who has been as high as No. 12 in the WTA rankings, ended with her year-end ranking at No. 14. She pocketed $1.3 million in 2012 following a highly successful 33-23 singles season.
Another sporting couple recently made news when tennis No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki had to fend off hints of her engagement to no. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy.
Wozniacki, quickly ousted in the first round the Brisbane International tourney, was spotted wearing a diamond ring on her wedding finger.
"It was a Christmas present and it fit on this finger," she said. "I put it on, and all of a sudden I hear that I'm engaged. I'm not. It's already twice we've had to shut down engagement rumors.
Concerning his engagement, Ovechkin mentioned to the Washington Post, how much he enjoyed being with Kirilenko.
“We have a good relationship,” Alex Ovechkin said. “It’s always nice to have that kind of person around you. It’s good.”
