Alex Gurney hopes the timing is right for a Rolex 24 win

Alex Gurney, son of legendary driver Dan Gurney, won overall pole Thursday when he completed a fast lap of 1 minute, 38,270 over the 3.56 mile course in his No. 99 Corvette. DP on the overall pole with a fast lap of 1 minute, 38.270 seconds (130.416 mph), stating that a victory would be very “sweet” indeed.
"It would be the biggest thing in my career, I think. But yeah, for me personally, this is the biggest race we do in North America. It's the one we all want to win," he exclaimed.

Alex’s father Dan captured the won the first incarnation of the Rolex 24, (then known as the Daytona Continental) in 1962. Yet he and longtime racing partner Jon Fogarty have never won the Rolex 24, despite being winning the Rolex Series twice. They will be joined this weekend by Darren Law and Memo Gidley.

''We've been thinking about it for a long time. Every year, we think we have it figured out, just hard to test for things that are going to break at hour 18 or hour 16, so we've tried to address those things over the year, but each time something new crops up, Alex stated. “It's never been speed necessarily that's been the problem. We've always had some sort of mechanical issue that has hurt us. Fingers crossed, we feel prepared and we're hoping for the best.''

Other class poles won Thursday include former NASCAR driver Colin Braun, who put the No. 54 ORECA FLM09 through a lap of 1:41.777 (125.922), in the Protype Challenge (enough to qualify 14th overall); Christopher Haase who claimed top spot in GT Daytona , after his No. 48 Audi R8's lap of 1:46.973 (119.806) for an overall finish of 34; and Marc Goossens who’s No. 91 SRT Viper GTS- R completed a lapin 1:44.506 (122.634) to win the pole in the GT LeMans class. His car will start 25th overall.

The 2014 Rolex 24 marks the first event for the TUDOR Championship season, borne from the merger of former rivals the American Le Mans Series and the GRAND-AM Rolex Series.
