Cirque du Soleil has produced some of the most amazing shows in the last 25 years. One of them, “Alegría,” has mesmerized millions of people since its creation in 1994. And there is a good reason why. The following is a review of the premiere that took place on July 22, 2010, at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Canada.
“Alegría” is a typical Cirque du Soleil show. There is circus. There is drama. But above all, there is beauty. Nothing can go amiss. One highlight follows another.
A duo performs breathtaking manoeuvres on synchronized swinging trapeze and gymnastics becomes magic, as a group of performers execute some extraordinary somersaults on a trampoline. Then, the hand balancing act leaves the entire audience breathless. Enchantment continues with Congo drums and the Fire-Knife Dance. And when the Flying Man takes the stage, his mid-air acrobatics reveal a passionate connection between the performer and his work tool.
The show continues with Russian bars. Performers are thrown in the air and land on bars perched on the shoulders of powerful catchers. Two contortionists display amazing strength and flexibility on a moving platform. Finally, acrobats fly to and from the arms of strong catchers and end up plunging into the net.
From start to finish, “Alegría” delivers its magic. Vibrant colors, gorgeous costumes and constant movement – through dance and choreography – appeal to the five senses, awaking deep emotions. Transitions between the acts are perfect. The Clowns, in particular, are delightful. They connect with the audience, making them laugh like children. Their simple pranks remind us that the purpose of art and circus is to help people reconnect with their inner child.
In “Alegría,” dreams meet reality in a beautiful embrace. In a nutshell, the show is a masterpiece. You have to see it!
