Movie actor Alec Baldwin was arrested in New York City for riding his bicycle the wrong way, according to the New York Daily News. He was also handcuffed and led away for failling to show his identification.
The "30 Rock" star was bicycling the wrong way down 16th and Fifth Streets near Union Square in Manhattan when he was detained by two police officers. He's scheduled for a court appearance on July 24 in the Manhattan Criminal Court.
Baldwin, 56, was stopped at 10:15 a.m. and refused to show his ID. Maybe Baldwin felt the policemen should recognize him.
Baldwin has had several notable appearances in movies Glengarry Glen Ross, Miami Blues, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Cooler and The Departed. He was nominated for an Oscar for best actor for his role in the Cooler.
In Glengarry Glen Ross he played one of the greatest "chew out" roles in movie history. Based on a real estate company whose salesmen were performing poorly, Baldwin was hired by the bosses of the corporation to appear in the offices and "inspire" the employees to increase their sales.
Baldwin strolled into the room full of real estate people and created instant chaos with his memorable role. When one of the salesmen walked over to pour himself a cup of coffee he yelled, "You don't deserve coffee! Closers deserve coffee! You are not a closer!" Evidently these salesmen had not closed enough sales.
The startled employee appears to morph into a state of shock.
Having gotten everyone's attention, he pulled the expensive Rolex watch off his wrist and placed it on the desk. He roared, "This watch is worth more than the cars any of you drive! You're not closers!"
The insulted employees including Jack Lemon stare back at Baldwin in amazement.
While his appearance in the movie is only for a few minutes it has gone down in the history of movies as perhaps the greatest scene portraying a boss chewing out employees ever filmed.
Baldwin joked about the incident today, telling a New York reporter, "There is only one crime more serious in New York than riding a bike the wrong way down the street and that's terrorism."
He also said when he and his wife were getting out of their car to attend a party for Barbara Walters he spotted a Fedex biker pedaling the wrong way and he joked to a police officer standing nearby, "How come nobody's arresting him?"
He said the officer laughed.
Baldwin predicted his arrest would be sorted out in court.
