It was July 20, 1969 when Buzz Aldrin became the second person to walk on the moon and the first person to report seeing a UFO while in space. While walking on the moon was one of the biggest feats known to mankind, it was what he saw out the window during his flight on the way to the moon that has kept UFO enthusiasts fixated on this mission for almost half of a century, according to Yahoo Finance on July 8.
Because the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission happens on July 20, people have come together to share what they remember from the day Aldrin walked on the moon. Aldrin himself also participated in the Reddit AMA for this celebration. It was his report from back in 1969 that he saw something out the window of the Apollo ship that people are still talking about today. Did Aldrin see a UFO?
During one of the many interviews following his moon walk, Aldrin reported that he and the other astronauts saw something bright outside their space capsule on the way to the moon. This instantly started a landslide of UFO sightings by the Apollo 11 mission astronaut stories in the media of the day.
As The Register reports, Buzz Aldrin admits to seeing an UFO on that day, but he didn't say anything about it being alien. He couldn't identify it, but he was pretty sure where the bright light seen out the window of the Apollo spacecraft was coming from.
This report of a UFO seen during the Apollo mission is still around today even though Aldrin explained that what he said was “taken out of context.” He did see something bright out the Apollo 11 ship’s window, as did his fellow astronauts, but it could have been many things, said Aldrin.
Once back from the mission, the astronauts were debriefed and told that what they saw was probably one of the four panels or the rocket that the ship had separated from. Aldrin described what he saw while en route to the moon in 1969 as: “I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us.”
Many thought that at the debriefing the astronauts were instructed to play down what they saw and to say it was a piece of the rocket or the panels that separated once beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. This is what Aldrin basically said, that he was probably looking at the reflection of the sun off one of the four panels that dropped behind when the rocket dropped off.
He said that there were many other explanations besides being a spaceship from another planet. He ended by saying “I feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the sun reflecting off of one of these panels.” Because he wasn’t sure which one of the four panels he saw, technically, the definition could be “unidentified.”
This is what Aldrin said years ago after saying he saw that bright light. Then he explained what he saw, in what some considered a cover up:
"I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world - it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft. So in the close vicinity, moving away, were 4 panels. And I feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the Sun reflected off of one of these panels. Which one? I don't know. So technically, the definition could be 'unidentified'."
Years later Aldrin did admit to seeing a "craft" which started the theory of a cover up. During this new Reddit AMA, Aldrin explained why Neil Armstrong was the first man out of the Apollo, which made him the first to walk on the moon. Aldrin said the decision was made by NASA and it went by rank. Armstrong was first in rank, so first out the door.
Some folks have been brutal leaving comments calling Aldrin a "coward" for not finally revealing the truth that the moon walk was staged. These conspiracy theorists continue to believe that the moon walk was staged in a Hollywood-like studio. They also wanted to know how such clear images were sent back to Earth during that day and age. Check out the video above for more on the Reddit AMA.
On July 20, the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission is celebrated and with this in mind Aldrich participated in a Reddit AMA for the promotion of the anniversary.
“Starting July 10th through to the Anniversary on July 20th, YouTube, Google, Angry Birds, NASA,Space.com, celebrities, notable figures and people like you are all joining in the promotion and celebration on their own social channels using #Apollo45.”
