Los Angeles police have detained troubled San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after indicating he was in possession of a bomb. ESPN reported the incident happened on the afternoon of Sunday, April 13, 2014.
Police did not identify the man that they detained, but a statement was issued by 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke:
"We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith. As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment."
Apparently, Smith was going through screening at Terminal 1 in LAX. He was then randomly selected by TSA agents for a secondary screening.
At this point, Smith became belligerent and uncooperative with the entire situation and also with the TSA agent. It was then that Aldon Smith indicated to the TSA agent that he was in possession of a bomb before he headed out toward the gates.
The Los Angeles police then made contact with Smith at the gate and he ended up becoming belligerent and not cooperating yet again. Airport Police detained Smith from this point and took him into custody.
A number of witnesses at LAX ended up taking video of the whole incident.
There has been no word from the 49ers or NFL as to what kind of backlash or disciplinary action could come due to Aldon Smith's actions.
