There appears to be a belief among many people that drinking some alcohol during pregnancy is harmless. This is not the prevailing opinion among experts, who feel staying away from alcohol completely during pregnancy is the wisest course of action to take. Science Daily reported on Dec. 5, 2013, that alcohol in pregnancy causes kids to have impaired social skills.
In a recent study which was published in the journal Child Neuropsychology, it was found that drinking alcohol while pregnant increases the risk that your child will develop issues with social skills as they grow older. The study results suggest that children with prenatal alcohol exposure are at an increased risk of developing significant problems with cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social development.
The study indicates that it is becoming increasingly more evident that there is a need for early identification of social issues which are related to prenatal alcohol exposure. Intervention is important in order to take advantage of the developing brain's plasticity and to increase the likelihood of effecting worthwhile functional improvement.
Medline Plus writes that pregnant women are strongly encouraged not to drink alcohol during pregnancy. It has been shown that drinking alcohol while you are pregnant may cause harm to a baby inside the womb and may lead to long-term medical problems in the child after birth.
Because alcohol breaks down much more slowly in the baby's body than in an adult, the baby's blood alcohol level remains increased longer than the mother's. This creates a very dangerous situation which can sometimes lead to lifelong damage. The bottom line is women who are planning to become pregnant and women who are pregnant simply should not drink any alcohol.
