Alcazar: small scale luxury in Palm Springs

Just off Palm Springs' Palm Canyon Dr., the boutique Alcazar sits like a tiny Spanish Colonial palace – aptly named for the Arabic word that means precisely that.

The former Pepper Tree Inn re-opened as the Alcazar in 2011. The property adjoins restaurants Cheeky’s and Birba, part of the owner’s ABC Vision that encompasses “food, music, drink, design, art, travel and culture.”

The 34 rooms include touches of mid-century modern design amid white-on-white styled efficiency. Two rooms include fireplaces, and all are clustered around a gleaming pool and Jacuzzi lined with lemon, orange and palm trees.

The reception area includes a modernist chandelier and sprawling artwork by KeFe – two San Francisco artists who blend high imagination with classic renditions. Similar artwork is featured in rooms.

Parking surrounds the inn, which is covered by the $9 daily resort fee that also includes use of Townie bikes, wireless Internet, morning coffee and pastries by Cheeky’s, local and 800# calls and the business center.

It’s a treat to stumble out of the property on early mornings and walk just a few feet to the adjoining Cheeky’s - usually packed shortly after its 8 a.m. opening. It’s open for breakfast and lunch Wednesday through Monday, and closes at 2 p.m. The menu includes farm-to-table cuisine and locally sourced ingredients including an on-site herb garden.
