Albuquerque's monsoon season and the diversion channels that reroute that rain offer easy rides

Trailhead at Hunters Run Park

A good short Saturday morning ride along the Black Diversion channel (also known as the Black Arroyo Trail) in northwest Albuquerque gets the legs warmed up for something bigger.

Starting at Hunter’s Run Park on Chandler, the paved trail follows the diversion channel from here first going under Seven Bar Loop then crosses Ellison Dr. NW on its way to N. Seven Bar Loop, from there ride through Salida Del Sol Park. To add a little more to the ride on the return turn right on Golf Course Road NW then right on Westside Blvd. Then finally right on N. Seven Bar Loop and left on the Black Diversion channel for a return to Hunter’s Run Park. This makes for about a 4 mile loop with enough elevation gain to get warmed up but not too warm.

Always keep an eye open for wildlife
on these channel rides. Roadrunners, ground squirrels and all sorts of lizards and birds are very common. The lizards move almost as fast as the birds so they can be quite hard to identify so photographs always pay off. A camera is almost as important a part of a ride here as is water, G2 and sunglasses!
