Alberto Fujimori’s family to pledge reprieve citing poor health

The defense of the former Peruvian president will probably plead for a humanitarian reprieve, according to his daughter Keiko Fujimori, insisting in his delicate state of health. During an interview in a local radio station, the recently defeated presidential candidate stated that the family is evaluating to request the government for mercy, since the longtime cancer that affected his father.

“Our main worries are the stability of his health and then, once he stabilize, the defense and the family will take the decision whether or not to request the humanitarian reprieve”, Keiko declared this week.

Alberto Fujimori (72) is currently serving a 25 years term for corruption and Human Rights abuses. He was diagnosed with cancer and was treated with multiple surgeries to extirpate tumors. The former president of Peru between 1990 and 2000 was hospitalized last month after a nervous breakdown causing a significant loss of weight. His doctors indicated that this kind of emergencies may bring back the oral cancer detected in him.

The Supreme Court also confirmed the conviction on Fujimori’s cases of illegal phone hearings, irregular adquisition of media companies and congressman bribery. Considering the hard situation of the ex president, who is expecting to face decades in jail, the family is willing to ask the recently elected president, Ollanta Humala, to overhaul the case.

Humala has declared that he might give Fujimori a reprieve regarding his health state, although a recent poll indicated a large 65 percent of Peruvians opposes the potential pledge of mercy in this case. The reprieve for humanitarian reasons is a presidential measure that is given to a prisoner if his health is in a bad condition or his illness will cause his death. A similar case happened in Chile, when former dictator Augusto Pinochet was discharged from spending jail time due to his severe state of health, after being diagnosed with elderly dementia.
