Former WWE champion Alberto Del Rio is currently rehabilitating a torn groin that he sustained last December. Initially, the WWE thought that Del Rio would be back within 4 to 6 weeks which means that he could appear at the Royal Rumble on Sunday January 29th. Del Rio, the defending Royal Rumble champion, is unlikely to return in time according to a Wednesday January 19th report by The Wrestling Observer.
On the December 19th episode of RAW, Del Rio suffered a torn groin in a 6 man tag-team match that featured CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and Zack Ryder vs. Del Rio, The Miz, and Dolph Ziggler. Even if Del Rio were to return in time, he wasn't expected to win the Rumble. However, Del Rio will reveal a more aggressive in-ring attitude once he does return, which could help him win back the WWE title. Last December, there were reports that Vince McMahon believes Del Rio has the physical tools to be the top heel, but he's just got to be more aggressive.
