The Albany Devils broke a 2-2 tie with three third period goals and beat the Binghamton Senators 5-2, at the Times-Union Center on Sunday.
The B-Sens didn’t register a shot on goal until 4:07 remained in the first period. Mark Borowiecki did the honors, but Albany had 10 shots and two goals by then.
Goaltender Keith Kinkaid picked up the victory for Albany, making 22 saves and in the process, ending Binghamton’s five game winning streak.
Binghamton netminder Robin Lehner, who came in with a goals-against average of 1.83, gave up four goals on 40 shots. The loss also snaps his personal five-game winning streak.
The first period was dismal for Binghamton, as Albany’s Eric Gelinas scored a power-play goal 2:34 into the game. They doubled the lead at the 15:11 mark as they won the face-off, got traffic in front and kept banging away until Tim Sestito got it by Lehner, giving Albany a 2-0 lead.
The Devils outshot Binghamton 13-3 in the period.
The second period was a different story for Binghamton, who showed some jump in their step early and were rewarded for it. Jay Leach picked up a cross-checking and he disagreed loudly with the call, which earned him a second minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Patrick Wiercioch missed an open net with just under a minute left in the penalty, but got the puck back seconds later and knocked it in past Kinkaid, closing the gap to 2-1 with 14:07 left in the second period. Andre Benoit and Hugh Jessiman got the helpers.
Shane Prince tied things up at the 8:38 mark, when he went five-hole on Kinkaid, who looked to have the puck but it slipped underneath and in. Pat Cannone and Cole Schneider assisted on the tally.
The Devils led 31-15 in shots after 40 minutes, but it seemed Binghamton had the momentum.
Unfortunately, that was not the case as Binghamton was victimized by some bad luck. They looked to have a 3-on-1 break all set up, but Hugh Jessiman fell down and Albany turned things around with Adam Larsson went top-shelf on Lehner and giving the home team a 3-2 lead with 8:49 left in the contest.
Mattias Tedenby would score with 3:49 left to make it 4-2 and Steve Zalewski added an empty-netter with 2:02 to go, capping Albany’s 5-2 victory.
Mike Hoffman voiced his displeasure after the Zalewski goal and was tagged with a 10-minute misconduct, earning him an early exit.

Binghamton (21-8-1-2) will look to bounce back when they travel to Wilkes-Barre Wednesday night to take on the Penguins at 7:05 p.m.
