Today will be a sunny and pleasant start to the weekend across the Capital District of Albany and upstate New York, as high pressure dominates our weather. High temperatures will be mild in the low to mid 70's. The pleasant weather will not last though, as clouds will increase overnight in advance of the next weather system to our west.
Sunday will start out dry, but cloudy. In the afternoon, the cold front will approach and scattered rain showers will develop across the region. Temperatures will be in the upper 60's to near 70 degrees. After the frontal passage on Sunday night, it will remain cloudy with areas of fog and drizzle.
To start out our work week on Monday, there will be a brief break early in the day, before a secondary cold front approaches from the Great Lakes late in the afternoon, bringing another round of showers. Temperatures on Monday will be warmer in the mid 70's. A rather cool and fall-like air mass then looks to be ushered into our region for mid-week, with temperatures not getting out of the 60's for several days.
In the tropics, Tropical Storm Igor continues to strengthen this morning and is nearing hurricane strength. Igor is located in the central Atlantic Ocean and has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph with a minimum central pressure of 995 millibars. Igor is moving to the west at 21 mph and is expected to become a hurricane later today and then forecast to become a major hurricane by Tuesday. Interests in the northern Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of Igor over the next several days.
There is another area of interest with a broad area of low pressure in the eastern Caribbean sea that has a 60% chance of development in the next 48 hours. This area should be watched closely for the possibility of a tropical depression forming soon. Also, another vigorous tropical wave has just moved off the coast of Africa and is showing some signs of organization. Stay tuned to the National Hurricane Center for the latest information.
