Alan Mulally is out as a candidate for Microsoft CEO

Ever since Steve Ballmer, Redmond-based Microsoft CEO, made the announcement, in August, that he would be stepping down there has been one name topping the list to replace him. That name is current CEO of the Ford Motor Company Alan Mulally. Mr. Mulally has always denied these rumors saying that he would remain at Ford through the end of his current contract that runs out at the end of next year. Despite those denials he was named as one of the top two candidates last week. Once again the rumors have been quashed but this time it is director of the board Edsel Ford II saying Mr. Mulally is staying put.

"Alan is staying through the end of 2014 and that's all I know," company board director Edsel Ford II, great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford, told Bloomberg. "Frankly, he has told us that his plan is to stay with Ford through the end of 2014."

Even though Mr. Mulally is no longer a candidate for the top job he has already had some influence on the Redmond-based company. Before Steve Ballmer announced the re-organization of Microsoft back in July he turn to Mr. Mulally to get some advice on re-structuring a large corporation.

With Mr. Mulally out of the running for the top job at the Redmond-based giant that leaves Satya Nadella, vice president of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise group, considered the frontrunner to succeed Mr. Ballmer. Mr. Nadella has over 20 year with the Redmond-based company. He started out in R&D department after cutting his teeth over at Sun Microsystems.

With Mr. Mulally out of the running another name that might see some more consideration for the position is Stephen Elop. Mr. Elop was a former top executive at the Redmond-based giant until he left in September of 2010 to take over the reigns at Nokia. Mr. Elop recently returned to Microsoft earlier this week when the European Commission gave the go ahead on Microsoft's purchase of part of Nokia. Mr. Elop name has been on the list of CEO candidates but a rather long shot behind Mr. Mulally.
