Moviegoers rejoice! The Alamo Drafthouse Theater concept is coming to Yonkers this year. A unique proposition for avid film lovers, Alamo Drafthouse started out in Austin, Texas, home of the venerable Austin Film Festival and SXSW Film Festival. The lower Westchester area is in dire need of an art house theater (the nearest are Jacob Burns in Pleasantville and The Picture House in Pelham). Alamo Drafthouse Theaters are famous for showing an eclectic, adventurous repertoire of new, little known films. Did you read about a daring new indie film that played at a film festival? Chances are, you'll get a chance to see it at an Alamo Drafthouse Theater. But the movies they present aren't the only special draw.
Instead of eating at a restaurant before or after your film, at Alamo Drafthouse, you can eat from a row-length wooden table in front of your seat as you watch the feature. During the preshow, you browse through the paper menu while the lights are still on, write in your order, and the waiter will bring you your snacks, meal, soda, beer, wine and yes, cocktails (they offer a full bar) to enjoy during the film. During the feature you're free to order as often as you like by writing down another order and placing the paper menu for the waiter to see. The waiter will then unobtrusively crouch down, without disturbing your movie viewing experience, to bring you your order. According to Alamo Drafthouse, their waiters serve "with the speed and agility of a trained ninja."
To add to your moviegoing experience, the theater abhors distractions and has zero tolerance for talking or texting during films. Another plus is that there are no product ads before the show. Instead, they will offer appropriate, custom preshows that relate to the feature you're there to see. They also offer state of the art technology with digital or 35mm presentations with surround sound.
Rated the #1 theater in America, and founded in Austin, TX by Tim and Karrie League, I can attest to it's unique appeal, having visited the theater in 2010 when I was in Austin. I felt like I'd stumbled upon the most exciting, best kept secret, and I immediately wished that NY had an Alamo Drafthouse. Well, sometimes, wishes do come true.
The theater will be located at at 2548 Central Park Avenue in Yonkers, New York and is set to open in a few months. Their Facebook page on which you an check for exact opening dates is facebook.com/AlamoNYC
