Alamo Bowl Preview: Texas Longhorns vs Oregon Ducks

See also

The Texas Longhorns and the Oregon Ducks will face each other in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas this year. This bowl is not where either team was expecting to be playing. The Ducks had all hopes of playing in the National Championship game and the Longhorns were hoping to return to a BCS game.

The Ducks 10-2 lost some of their steam after the heart breaking loss to Stanford and lost focus when losing to Arizona. The 10 wins marks the sixth consecutive year the Oregon has won 10 or more games. This the second straight year that the Ducks are not playing in a bowl game that they deserve. This is Mark Helfrich first year as head coach for the Ducks and Oregon are just as explosive on offense.

Sophomore Marcus Mariota has thrown for 3,400 yards and 30 touchdowns and was candidate most of the season for the Heisman trophy. Oregon needs only 444 total yards to set a new school record for total offense in a season.

The Longhorns 8-4 after losing two straight games to BYU and Ole Miss the fan base were calling for the administration to fire Mack Brown as the head coach. The team responded with six straight wins to put them in a position to play for the Big 12 Championship and a guaranteed spot in a BCS game. That was not to be, the Longhorns lost to I-35 rival the Baylor Bears 30-10.

Shortly after the regular season loss to the Bears Brown submitted his resignation after coaching the Longhorns for 16 years and leading the school to the National Championship game twice and won it 2005 with Vince Young as quarterback.

This is a season that most Longhorns would like to forget from an embarrassing loss to BYU and allowing them to run rough shot over them, quarterback injuries, mid season coaching change and everyone second guessing the play calling. David Ash started the season at quarterback, but was sidelined due to head injuries. Case McCoy took over and he showed some flashes at time, but he was great as a signal caller.

The Longhorns’ defense came into the season with much pomp and circumstance, but they did not live up to potential at times. Jackson Jeffcoat has done his part this season and will have his hands full in trying to stop the Ducks’ offense. Jeffcoat won the Ted Hendricks Award as the best defensive lineman in the country.

Texas leads the series over Oregon 4-1, but all of those wins occurred before 1972. The last meeting between the two teams occurred in the 2000 Holiday Bowl with Oregon won 35-30. The Alamo Bowl game will mark the second time the two sides have met in a bowl game.
