An Alabama terrorism case came to a close on Dec. 20 when two men were sentenced to 15 years in prison. According to Reuters, Randy "Rasheed" Wilson and Mohammad Abdul Rahman Abukhdair pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to provide "material support to terrorists" earlier this year. The men were allegedly planning "to wage violent holy war overseas" but their plan was foiled by the FBI.

"U.S. District Judge Kristi DuBose said she pored over hundreds of hours of recorded conversations and emails between Wilson and Abukhdair and concluded they had conceived a 'well-researched plan' to support jihad. They also spoke of killing Americans to further their cause, the judge said," Reuters reports.

The Alabama terrorism plot was made clear when the two men purchased airline tickets to Morocco. On the day that they were scheduled to fly out, they were arrested (in separate locations). The FBI had been watching them since 2011, recording their conversations, and trying to figure out when they would leave the US and where they would try to go.

Wilson and Abukhdair became friends online. Prosecutors say that their friendship was based on their extreme Islamic views. They had been living apart and trying to plan their trip overseas but eventually ended up living together in Mobile, Ala. with Wilson's family.

The Alabama terrorism suspects both received the maximum penalty in this case.
