The U.S. Navy and authorities have released a photo and profile of Jimmy Lee Dykes, the suspect who allegedly stormed a school bus on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, shot a bus driver dead, and abducted a five-year-old boy identified only as Ethan and has taken the child hostage in a backyard, Alabama bunker. According to the U.S. Navy profile, Dykes is 65-years-old, lives in Midland City, Alabama and enlisted in the Navy on October 8, 1964. He was released on Jan. 10, 1969 after being stationed in Japan and California. According to the profile, Dykes earned multiple medals and commendations while in the service including the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. It is unclear exactly why Jimmy Lee Dykes took the child hostage and authorities are working diligently to ensure Ethan’s safe return.
The Dale County Sheriff’s Office is handling the case; however, updates regarding the situation have been rare. It is understood that authorities are using a PVC pipe that is somehow connected to the bunker Dykes and the child are holed up in for communication purposes. Authorities have used the pipe to send coloring books, crayons and medications for Ethan. Ethan is reportedly autistic. While authorities are tight-lipped in order not to hinder the negotiations process, Dykes’ neighbors are speaking and sharing several bizarre stories and encounters regarding the senior who gunned down Charles Albert Poland, Jr., who reportedly died while trying to protect the 21 children he was entrusted with.
Charles Albert Poland, Jr., worked with the Dale County Board of Education since 2009. A press release issued by the school board, stated that Poland was 66-years-old, and well loved and respected by his co-workers.
The statement reads, “Mr. Poland was well-loved by all of us here at Dale County Schools and has been a bus driver for the school system for four years. Prior to his full-time service, he was a substitute bus driver. He was a valuable member of our transportation department, and we will forever remember his for the bravery he showed yesterday.”
A viewing will be held for Charles Albert Poland, Jr., on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, from 5 pm to 8 pm at Sorrell’s Funeral Home located in Slocomb, Alabama. The funeral will take place Sunday, Feb. 3 2013 beginning at 2 pm at the Ozark Civic Center.
Authorities believe that Ethan has been unharmed and have asked the public to pray for his safe return.
