Alabama may see baby boom if Auburn wins national championship

The emotional response of people to football victories and other sporting events can produce predictable demographic changes according to research reported by Jesus Montesinos from the Xarxa Assistencial Universitaria de Manresa in Barcelona, Spain in the Dec. 17, 2013, edition of the British Medical Journal.

The team of researchers investigated the media reports of a 45 percent increase in births in the Barcelona area nine months after Football Club Barcelona beat Chelsea in the last minute of the Union of European Football Association championship on May 6, 2009.

The children born during this baby boom were dubbed "the Iniesta generation" after Andrés Iniesta, who scored the winning goal.

The researchers examined 11,000 birth records from 2007 to 2012 and found that births did increase by 16 percent nine months after Barcelona won.

The researchers argue that governments need to be attentive to the emotional effects that sports victories have on population and plan for better birth control, health planning, and government assistance.

Should Auburn win the NCAA football title in 2013, Alabama may see a baby boom nine months into 2014.

The researchers note that “national or regional events can reduce the weight of reason and increase the weight of passion” in peoples behavior.

Some soccer clubs have taken the message to heart and are distributing team branded condoms. One might think this action may be a good idea for Alabama, a state that can hardly afford to care for the population it has now.
