Due to the fatal accident involving a horse and a rider, Deputy Coroner Michael Head was called in. According to Head, Hoyt Garrison Cline was horseback riding and was involved in a serious fall when both horse and rider went down, causing the death of the rider.
The riding accident happened on Sunday, September 15, 2013, at about 3:25 in the afternoon.
The 54-year-old Cline was riding a horse on his own Shady Grove Road property in Altoona, Alabama. Something spooked his usually-tractable horse. It is assumed that the horse was seriously startled, acting up, and this caused Cline to fall off but still staying attached to the horse somehow, perhaps by a stirrup. The horse was already off balance and, frightened, was struggling to regain his footing. The animal ended up dragging Cline for a short distance. Now, more frightened than ever, the horse lost his footing and fell on Cline, crushing him with his weight.
The fatally injured Cline was transported to Marshall County Medical Center. The coroner pronounced that Hoyt Garrison Cline had died of his injuries.
