The Alabama hostage situation with the five-year-old child in a bunker is over. CNN is reporting this afternoon, Feb. 4, that Jimmy Dykes is dead, and the little child is safe. The details are not clear, but the entire country is breathing a sigh of relief.
According to the report, there were gunshots or explosions heard a few minutes before 5 p.m. EST. Police confirmed to CNN that the abductor was dead. Onlookers said the child look to be all right emerging from the bunker, but he was taken to a nearby hospital.
A neighbor talked to CNN:
One neighbor said he was outside when he was startled by the sound of an explosion.
"I head a big boom and then ... I believe I heard rifle shots," said Bryon Martin, who owns a home near the bunker where the boy had been held since Tuesday.
It is unclear if Jimmy Dykes died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot or explosive or was killed in some fashion by law enforcement officials.
