Alabama faces shortage of geriatric doctors

By the 2020's almost 20% of the US population will be over 65. The state of Alabama currently has a higher number of elder residents and that number will climb along with the nation's. Unfortunately, there are not enough medical professionals who are trained to address the growing geriatric population's unique needs. There are roughly 5,000 doctors nationwide who practice geriatric medicine. There needs to be an increase into the tens of thousands just to meet current national demand and by the 2020's that number needs to increase to nearly 40,000 in order to meet the increased demand.
