Compared to the austere brick buildings of Transylvania University campus nearby, the corner of 6th and Limestone may seem like another world to some. However, a growing number of college students are making the trek to the north-east side enticed by the friendly neighborhood atmosphere of Al's Bar, located just on the opposite side of downtown Lexington from the University of Kentucky. Despite the tough looking liquor store across the street and the ramshackle housing up and down the block, this venue is one of Lexington’s finest and most exciting places to see live music and enjoy tasty beverages and bar food.
Beyond the entrance, the establishment is flanked by a series of booths to the left and an ample bar to the right. Further investigation of the space reveals a large room beyond the bar with a full-sized pool table, arcade games, several more booths and tables and a nice sized stage for live performances.
In addition to being open for dinner Wednesday and Thursday and for lunch and dinner Friday-Sunday, Al’s bar offers a variety of evening entertainment. Patrons who frequent the venue on Wednesday nights enjoy Al’s popular cult film series; they gather with friends and view classic B-movies while drinking their favorite beverages and eating free popcorn. They are currently working to establish themselves as “the premier Bluegrass music venue in the entire universe” but other genres of music are frequently featured. A smattering of local acts that regularly take the stage at Al’s are: Spooky Q’s, Big Maracas, The Swells, Ford Theater Reunion and Sunday Valley.
Al’s Bar has a menu that features local, organic ingredients: a variety of gourmet burgers and house-made sides are always available. They pride themselves on having Lexington’s smallest beer list but the "world’s most extensive bourbon list for a dive bar"; they feature over 25 bourbons and Kentucky whiskies!
For lovers of Al’s bar and draft beer, Al’s Sidecar is located right next door. Never a cover, $2 draft PBR, pool table, darts, DJs and dance parties.
