Although news of a gold bounty to kill the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen appears to be a dramatic theme from a Hollywood movie, this is nevertheless for real. Joe Wolverton, II, J.D. has reported for Newsmax on Jan. 4, 2013, Al-Qaeda in Yemen Offers 6 Pounds of Gold for Death of U.S. Ambassador. Information has been posted to Islamist websites placing a bounty of three kilograms (6.6 pounds) of gold on the head of U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Gerald Feierstein.
That large sum, which was valued at about $160,000 at press time, will reportedly be paid by Al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula (AQAP) to anyone who manages to kill Feierstein. This organization, which is allegedly a regional branch of the larger al-Qaeda network, is also offering five million rials ($23,350) to anyone who succeeds in killing an American soldier in Yemen. It appears President Barack Obama’s escalation of the drone war in Yemen and his alleged callous disregard for innocent people killed in the drone blast zone is probably responsible for setting off these bounty offers.
The Voice of America has also reported on a bounty which has been offered to kill the U.S. Ambassador in Yemen, Al-Qaida in Yemen Offers Bounty for US Ambassador. It has been stated by the Al-Qaida that the offer of a bounty, which is valid for six months, has been made ``to encourage our Muslim Ummah (nation), and to expand the circle of the jihad holy war by the masses.'' This has followed the killing of four U.S. officials, including the ambassador to Libya. The Pentagon has said a platoon of Marines was sent to Yemen after demonstrators stormed the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa.
