Adam Sandler will star as both titular character in Jack and Jill, a comedy that just landed stars Al Pacino and Katie Holmes to its cast. It's just the latest in a long line of "Well, that might be good, but will probably be incredibly mediocre" comedies from the former SNL star, but Pacino's presence will certainly class up the join. Want to know more about Jack and Jill? Keep on reading, my gentle Examiner readers...
Are we to be surprised that Al Pacino has accepted a role in an upcoming Adam Sandler film? While there will be much gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair at this decision, it's not as though the warning signs weren't there: Jack Nicholson starred opposite Sandler in Anger Management, and Pacino has really just been stuck in "Perma-Scream" mode for the past decade. As for Katie Holmes, she's happy to star in anything. Wasn't she most recently in a bank-robbery comedy with Queen Latifah and Diane Keaton? QED, suckers.
Anyhow, Jack and Jill is the project, and here's the plot according to SlashFilm.com: "The storyline follows Jack, a family man, who must deal with his twin sister Jill, who visits for Thanksgiving and won’t leave...Sandler will be playing both the titular Jack and his twin sister Jill....Holmes will play Sandler’s wife, while Pacino will play himself." So, we've got Adam Sandler playing two roles-- Eddie Murphy-style (has he really gotten to that point already? I was giving that another ten years, minimum) and Al Pacino playing himself. And Katie Holmes doing whatever Katie Holmes does. Excuse me if this news doesn't set your world aflame.
This summer, Adam Sandler had one of the more stable hits of the season with Grown Ups, a film that bombed with critics but struck gold with the middle America masses. The main criticism leveled against that film was that it was toothless, just another one of Sandler's lazy summer comedies. Having been shut out for his work in Funny People and Punchdrunk Love by the people who give out awards, what did we expect him to do? You people all should've listened when I told you to watch Punchdrunk Love, because ignoring it is precisely what's led to things like Grown Ups and Jack and Jill.
While no announcement has been made, we can probably go ahead and assume that there'll be a bit role somewhere in Jack and Jill for Rob Schneider (whose recently-released comedy album is...well, just look at this). Stay tuned for more on this one as it becomes available, and while you're waiting, feel free to check out some footage from this awesome movie you never bothered watching:
