Akron residents can help promote federal human trafficking legislation

AKRON, Ohio – April 2012 – This week Senator Portman introduced the End Trafficking in Government Contracting Act of 2012. Unfortunately, human trafficking by federal government contractors and subcontractors operating overseas is a serious problem. The End Trafficking in Government Contracting Act responds by requiring contractors to implement trafficking prevention programs, and by strengthening oversight and investigation of trafficking reports to eliminate trafficking on federal grants and contracts.

Gracehaven House, located in Columbus Ohio, hopes to open their doors soon to sexually exploited female minors. The organization reports 1,000 youth, ranging in age from 12-17 are sexually exploited, in the State of Ohio.

Opprotunities to get involved:

Call and thank Senator Portman!

1. My name is [NAME] and I live in Akron, Ohio. I was just calling to thank
Senator Portman for introducing the End Trafficking in Government
Contracting Act. This is an important bill that will fight human
trafficking, an issue I really care about. Will you pass along my gratitude
to the senator?

Call Senator Portman: 202-224-3353

(A year ago Senator Portman was not a co-sponsor of the Trafficking in Victims Protection Re-authorizationAct (TVPRA). Because of phone calls, letters, and lobby efforts, he not only co-sponsored the bill but is now taking a leading role in introducing legislation to fight human trafficking.

2. Sign your name on this letter to President Obama asking him to make the US a leader in fighting HT:

3. Finally, call Ohio's two US Senators and encourage them to move S1301 to
the Senate floor for a full vote. Here is a sample script:

"Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I'm calling from Akron, Ohio to
voice my support for the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization
Act, S. 1301. I'd like to ask the Senator to do everything in [HIS/HER]
power to get this important bill passed. This legislation helps to combat
human trafficking around the globe and right here in Ohio, an issue
I really care about. Would you please pass my message on to the Senator?
Thank you!"
