Akron Beacon Journal features new The Word Church Akron branch on front page

People all over are geeked about The Word Church opening a branch in Akron inside North High School, and The Word Church Akron Facebook page is steadily growing with fans who "like" the page to keep up with new information.

On Tuesday, The Akron Beacon Journal featured the new Akron branch of The Word Church brand on their front page, devoting most of the paper to news of what's been buzzing around the city since it opened August 22, 2010.

The well-informed piece was written by Colette M. Jenkins, the same Beacon Journal staff writer who covered Bishop T.D. Jakes' visit to the area several years ago.

(I remember watching her work that night, and I learned from her how to note the number of folks in a large room by counting off maybe a section of 50 and then multiplying out for good estimates when capacity numbers aren't clear. Sounds like what Jesus did when he organized folks to sit down in sections before the loaves and fishes miracle.)

"Everyone's talking about it," said Alanna, a local student and member of the Akron church's media team.

As a member of the media ministry myself, I can testify to the excitement and interest that this new location has brought -- and appreciate the logic behind opening churches in locations with little overhead, affording any extra money to then be used to help the community with groceries and other needs.

The Journal piece also sheds light on a lot of other information, including quotes from other local area pastors and more info about Pastor Wayne Hoye, who can be seen in the below YouTube video.

Which brings us to the digital means whereby many people are learning about the church -- via online means.

Just like I read from Techcrunch that more people discovered their news online than by traditional newspapers yesterday, a lot of folks are finding out about the church via Facebook and The Word Church Akron's YouTube channel.

Walking around Summit Mall this morning, I was offered a free Beacon Journal, but I refused it. Lo and behold, I found out our church had made the front page via Facebook, so I sought out the piece on Ohio.com -- and then and only then did I go search out a print newspaper to purchase for perpetuity.

As one excited ministry member wrote on Facebook, "I'm going to buy like 20 copies! We are a part of history in Akron!"
