Recording artist Akon visited Glen Haven Elementary School in Decatur, Georgia today in honor of national Read Across America Day. At his side was his Mother, Kine Gueye Thiam who is also President of the Konfidence Foundation. Akon and his Mother read and distributed books to the students as well as discussed the importance of reading.
The Konfidence Foundation is a non-profit organization which is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the conditions in Africa as well as providing modern learning tools such as technology and educational materials to children in that region. With an interest in education and reading, the Konfidence Foundation’s values are right in line with the goals of Read Across America Day; making Akon and his Mother’s visit to Glen Haven Elementary School significant in helping raise awareness for the importance of reading as well as making reading materials accessible to children.
Read Across America Day is an annual event which kicked-off at the Library of Congress today. The event occurs every year on Dr. Seuss’s birthday; March 2. The goal of Read Across America Day is to bring the excitement of books to children everywhere.
