A well known drifter that often appears on Best Motoring destroyed a Mazda RX7 after making the wrong choice during a drifting educational video. Slamming the car through an embankment and drowning it in the proceeding ditch waters, the RX7 suffered from hydro-lock, turbo damage, and exterior structural and frame damage. The RX7 used during this drift session was fully built and prepared for drifting, but not ditch diving. It is rare to see a high tech vehicle like the rotary powered RX7 slammed into a ditch only to be drenched with the nastiest of water, track ditch! But wait, there's more.

The damage caused by the initial impact was just the beginning. To get out of this mess, the RX7 needed to be driven through further much nastier flooded ditch. To our surprise, the rear wheel drive RX7 handles quite well in these off road conditions. Climbing out of the sess pond and back onto the pavement, you can see the drenched motor radiating steam. How hot do you think that motor was when it hit the cool water? When hot solids hit cooler temperatures at such a drastic exposure rate, cracking occurs. There is simply no where for the stress of quick temperature change to escape so it breaks materials. Beyond just hydro-locking the motor, it's probably cracked the block, turbo, and other various heated parts. Ouch!
Regardless of how silly this may seem, and how easily it appears to have been avoidable there is still a lesson to be learned. Even the best of the best wreck, and wrecking is sometimes unavoidable. No matter what form of racing you choose to endure, a wreck will always occur at one point or another. Each time you get into a vehicle you roll the dice, even for a simple daily commute. Vehicles are simply unpredictable machines by nature, only assumable up to a certain point. Enjoy the following footage and remember to take caution when operating your vehicle! Do you drift? That's fascinating. His throttle and steering inputs were way too harsh for wet conditions and yet the slick surface lends itself to "easier" drifting.
Do they hold drifting events when it rains? That is something I've never thought of before!
