The American Kennel Club named the top 10 dog breeds this week. For the 22nd straight year, the Labrador retriever is the nation's most popular dog.
The German shepherd is still at the number two spot followed by the very popular golden retriever.
The ever popular hunting breed, the beagle came up number four. The English bulldog ranks number five followed in order by the Yorkshire terrier, boxer, poodle, rottweiler and last but not least, the dachsund.
There was a gathering of all of these popular breeds on Madison Avenue in New York last Wednesday at the American Kennel Club headquarters.
There were dogs of all ages and all came from the New York area. Some were known champions, a couple were therapy dogs.
An eight week old puppy, a German shepherd named Tsunami, is possibly going to be trained as a scent detection dog.
The breeds chosen for this popular list are based on the number of dogs of each breed registered with the American Kennel Club each year.
Labrador retrievers seem to be popular because they are so versatile. They can be not only a great family dog, but also a great police dog, hunting dog, search and rescue dog as well as coming in 3 colors.
