Ajani, Mentor of Heroes from 'Journey Into Nyx' revealed

Revealed today April 9, 2014 in an article by Kelly Digges on DailyMtg.com, Ajani, Mentor of Heroes is one of the newest spoiler cards from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming "Magic: The Gathering" expert expansion set "Journey Into Nyx." This powerful mythic rare planeswalker is the fourth version of Ajani that we've seen to date. At five mana Ajani, Mentor of Heroes doesn't come down as fast compared to Ajani, Caller of the Pride, however it has a lot of great things going on with it. Let's take a look:

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes - 3GW
Planeswalker (Mythic Rare)
+1 Loyalty: Distribute three +1/+1 counters among one, two, or three target creatures you control.
+1 Loyalty: Look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal an Aura, creature, or planeswalker card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.
-8 Loyalty: You gain 100 life.
Starting Loyalty of 4

Ajani, Mentor of Heroes' first ability ensures that your threats, no matter how big or small they are, quickly become relevant. You can beef up one of your creatures significantly with three +1/+1 counters, two creatures with one and two counters respectively, or three creatures with one counter each. In the current Standard environment there's several strong Selesnya creatures right out of the gate, such as Fleecemane Lion, Loxodon Smiter, and Advent of the Wurm (all of which become much larger than any blocker your opponent may have). Of course we'd be remiss not to mention other all-stars like Soldier of the Pantheon (even if you can't target it) and Voice of Resurgence that you'll want to make room for.

You'll be able to gain card advantage and overwhelm the battlefield with threats thanks to Ajani's second ability, which allows you to take an Aura, creature, or planeswalker from the top four cards of your library into your hand and put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. By running very few instant, sorcery, and artifact cards in your deck you'll be able to increase the odds of having multiple options to choose from when you activate this option. That just leaves lands, and there's a real slim chance you'll reveal four. If you're worried Courser of Kruphix will allow you to help mitigate the odds.

Gaining 100 life with the "ultimate" ability of Ajani, Mentor of Heroes will make you feel like a god. Some decks will never be able to deal with that massive amount of life gain, however with the power creep of creatures over the past decade 100 life can quickly be lost in a few short turns.

How will you use Ajani, Mentor of Heroes?
