A dull BCS game was highlighted by quarterback AJ McCarron's girlfriend. Katherine Webb was spotlighted during Alabama's dominant victory over Notre Dame, and may have given commentator Brent Musberger a near heart attack.
Webb, a 2012 Miss USA pageant contestant and reigning Miss Alabama, was part of the crowd as she rooted on her boyfriend's efforts in the rout of the Fighting Irish. Since the game wasn't the most entertaining, the 73-year-old Musberger decided to start commenting on the eye candy. The LA Times recapped his remarks in a Jan. 8 report.
Among Musberger's comments (see video):
"You quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful woman."
"Whoa! If you're a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with Pop."
Most viewers may have found Musberger's remarks to be perfectly fine, or even comical and entertaining. After all, the game was clearly going one way, and it's hard to deny that McCarron's dating a beautiful woman. Why not engaged in a bit of people watching and ogling in the crowd? However, others have found Brent's comments to be "creepy" or "gross." After all, his age is more than double that of McCarron's girlfriend.
The good news for Katherine Webb is all the extra "exposure" she got on Monday night has led to an increase in fans. Being pointed out in the crowd on national TV during such a huge game has helped her popularity on Twitter, for what it's worth. A Jan. 8 report from CBS News indicates Miss Alabama surpassed her boyfriend's total followers on Twitter and gained over 90,000 of her own followers during the course of the game. That included the much younger than Musberger, Darnell Dockett of the Arizona Cardinals. The defensive linemen went as far as to tweet his phone number to Webb in case she wants to step up to the big leagues early. She may be content waiting for AJ's payday to arrive in the NFL, along with an engagement ring at some point.
Last night's BCS National Championship game saw Alabama win in a blowout, 42-14 over Notre Dame. The game was televised live Monday evening in Roanoke on ESPN via Cox Cable channel 25.
Readers, what do you think of Musberger's comments about AJ's girlfriend during last night's BCS National Championship game, out of line, or perfectly fine?
