Airports across the country are experiencing major delays due to the East Coast snow storm this weekend. Traffic arriving at Philadelphia International Airport has been delayed an average of 6 hours, the Federal Aviation Administration reported this morning.
Newark, JFK, La Guardia Airport, and Atlantic City had minor delays up to 15 minutes for arriving and departing flights, but snow is expected to hit these areas Saturday afternoon. Additional airport delays are expected.
Flights are also being cancelled. Travelers are encouraged to contact the airlines before leaving home to check on individual flight delays.
Chicago, Miami, Salt Lake City airports are experiencing delays because flights coming from the East Coast are delayed. As of midday, delays for airports outside of the East Coast area were 30-60 minutes.
Snow is expected to continue throughout the day in New York and the winter snow storm is expected to move North East Sunday.
Tens of thousands of people are without power in West Virginia, North Carolina and Virginia. In Virginia, some freeways are backed up for up to twenty miles. Officials are asking people to stay home and not travel out into the storm. Many drivers have abandoned their cars as highway conditions made it impossible to drive.
East coast weather forecasts are calling for 12-20 inches of snow across the entire North East region. In Washington DC, many public transit systems have been shut down.
