Looking to attract additional passengers by offering direct flights to Hawaii, Mexico, and Washington, D.C., Orange County will be paying airlines to fly from John Wayne Airport reported the L.A. Times on December 18, 2013.

On Tuesday, Orange County supervisors unanimously approved a $1.3 million incentive package to encourage more direct flights from John Wayne Airport.

2010 was the last year that a direct flight from Hawaii was offering out of John Wayne Airport. Airlines that are willing to offer twice-a-week flights to Hawaii will receive $50,000 in airline terminal rental credit.

There has never been a direct flight from Orange County to Washington, D.C. Orange County is offering $300,000 in credit to the airline that can provide 5 days a week direct service to Washington, D.C., flying into Reagan Washington National Airport, Dulles International Airport, or Baltimore Washington International Airport.

A majority of the incentive package, $900,000 will be used to keep direct flights to Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City.
