For the third time in the last few weeks, airlines are increasing the fees for airline travelers for travel on peak days. The announcement comes just after their initial fee charge for peak travel in 2009 back in October and and another increase for peak travel earlier this month.
Delta, Northwest, United, and United are going to bump their fee from $20 to $30 next March and April and $50 on the day after the Super Bowl. United is going to add a 5 percent surcharge on all flights after May 8.
The dates for the Delta and Northwest $30 are March 14, 20, 21 and April 5 and 11. More dates may be added in the future and dates may vary by airline. However, most airlines typically follow the same peaek travel dates (more peak travel days will be posted as information becomes available). It seems the reason for these increases is due to increasing costs to hedge against future uncertain costs that may arise and to help with falling revenues.
So is this a fare hike or a surcharge? It doesn't matter what you call it, it seems flying is going to be even more expensive in 2010.
