Only weeks after a warning of a toothpaste bomb by Department of Homeland Security (DHS), officials warned airlines of an increased threat of explosives being smuggled inside of shoes on flights into the United States (US). The alert to airlines was issued to airlines on Wednesday, February 19, outlining the potential for terrorist operatives to smuggle another shoe bomb or explosive liquids on flights headed to the US.
DHS urges airlines to increase scrutiny of passengers on flights bound for the US. Officials say this alert is unrelated to the 'toothpaste alert' for flights to Russia during the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
Though the DHS has recently found 'specific intelligence' about terrorists designing another shoe bomb, there are no particulars about where the attack will originate, nor a time-frame of when an event may occur.
