I apologize for my absence, but sometimes life gets in the way of doing all those cool things you rather be doing such as writing this column. But a high note of my absence (pun intended—you missed me, you know it), I have found the coolest gym ever opening up in New Haven. Air Temple Arts, An Ariel Dance, Circus, and Movement Studio, is opening on October 15 in the Trolley Square Building near Downtown New Haven.

From the official website:

We have over twenty weekly classes in aerial dance, circus and yoga for you to choose from, with four excellent teachers!

In addition to classes we offer open studios, juggling/spin jams, rigging point rental, and more!

Registration is currently open for the classes, although there is a drop-in option as well. I would think you would want to attend more than one class, though, based on the nature of the instruction. However, drop-in a nice option if you are unsure that the class is something you will be interested in for the long term or you are short on funds.

That said, I will tell you that I am shocked about how reasonable the prices are.

You can find a full listing of the classes as well as their prices on the website. You will also find a calendar with complete schedule there as well.

In addition to the actual classes, there are non-class offerings too such as private lessons, open studio, and spin/juggle jams.

I had never met anyone involved in the Circus Arts until I moved to New Haven, and I have been fascinated with it since. Unfortunately, I am afraid my ship may have sailed as far as being able to participate in most of these types of exercises, but I am going to give signing up for the Circus Fit or Aerial Yoga some consideration. I do wish I could share the look I got from my husband when I suggested we take the Introduction to Partner Acrobatics class . . .

So check it out. Even if you have never considered Circus Arts before. Even if you aren’t ready to hurl yourself through the air on scarves or spring across the floor on your hands. There just may be something here for you. And even if not, liking the Facebook page or telling your friends about the gym is another fantastic way to show your appreciation and support for the local arts scene. We all know that there can never be too much support.
