2013 has been a year of firsts when it comes to same-sex marriages and couples, and now another first can be added to the list.
Air New Zealand which has been a leader in putting high tech in-flight entertainment on its fleet of planes is now marking the beginning of same-sex marriages in the country of New Zealand.
On Monday August 19, Auckland, New Zealand couple Lynley Bendell and All Wanikau boarded a special Air New Zealand flight from Queenstown to Auckland with family and friends and were married inflight.
Making the occasion even more special was the fact that marriage equality promoter and Emmy-nominated "Modern Family" actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson along with his husband Justin, joined the happy couple as they exchanged their vows at 30,000 feet.
Ferguson said he was glad he was an invited guest.
"What I'm so blown away by, with my trip here, is the whole of New Zealand has come together," says Ferguson. "I'm very honored to be here witnessing this historic day for New Zealand."
The couple walked the aisle of the aircraft carrying bouquets like they would be in a church. Guests sat in first class and coach to witness the exchanging of vows.
The pair has been together for 13 years and have three beautiful children.
There is a video produced by Air New Zealand that you can watch and see the historic event take place.
