Airline layoffs aren't unique to the U.S. during the continuing worldwide recession, with Air France being the latest carrier to announce staff reductions. The airline has introduced a voluntary departure plan with the goal being the elimination of 1,500 jobs system-wide. The cuts are expected to come primarily from the airline's air freight division, which is "very affected by the sharp decline in global trade," Air France said in a press release.
Details of the job reduction plan will be released to employee representatives at an October meeting. The air carrier currently employs 57,000 people but has announced a reduction in cargo capacity of 15 percent and is also reducing passenger capacity by five percent in the coming year due to reduced demand.
American Airlines announced flight attendant layoffs this past week and has indicated that thousands more jobs will be lost in the months ahead.
