Air Force claims photo of airman tongue-kissing POW symbol is three years old

The female airman shown simulating a tongue-kiss with a POW-MIA symbol, in a now-viral photo, has been identified as Staff Sgt. Cherish Byers, of the 92nd Security Forces Squadron at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash., according to an Air Force spokesman.

The picture began making the rounds on Facebook a few days ago, to the outrage of veterans and civilians, alike.

The Air Force claims that the picture was actually taken three years ago, but has yet to determine where the incident took place.

Not that it really matters when Byers committed the incredibly disgusting act, but the rather obvious question becomes...How does the Air Force know when the photo was taken, yet they have no idea where it happened?

The Air Force Times reported:

Byers' behavior is certainly concerning to the Air Force, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James Cody said Friday in a statement...

"I want to make it clear that this is not a reflection of airmen who wear this uniform; it is a case of poor judgment of one airman ... to say we are disappointed would be an understatement. We are gathering all the details and will take appropriate action at the appropriate level. Our airmen fully understand the significance of the POW/MIA flag and the sacrifice of the men and women it honors," Cody said.

Byers is reportedly now the subject of a command-directed investigation to determine whether or not any punishment is warranted.
