Aion's free-to-play transition in Europe was a welcome shift, but North America was noticeably absent from the change. Luckily, Asmodians and Elyos in that region are being treated to free-to-play Aion this Spring.
Today, Aion: Ascension was announced as a "truly free" update to Aion. The popular, fantasy MMO will no longer require a subscription fee. Players will be able to explore with "unrestricted access" through the entire game, conquer its two expansions, complete over 3000 quests, and do much more.
When Aion transforms into Aion: Ascension it will be accompanied by the highly anticipated 3.0 patch. This patch includes a housing system, a mount system, new zones, new instances, and an increased level cap of 60. For a closer look at 3.0, check out this video.
New and returning players must take note of Aion's transition into the free-to-play world. New players will soon be treated to an endless trial with a level cap of 40 while returning players will have their accounts granted 14 days for free. This actions take place as part of NCSoft's Rallying the Troops promotion which is not underway quite yet.
