Currently enjoying a limited-city fall tour, singer/songwriter Aimee Mann stops by Nashville historic Belcourt Theatre Monday night for an intimate concert spanning her lengthy career.
Children of the 80s no doubt remember Aimee Mann as the sole female member of new wave favorites, 'Til Tuesday. Their 1985 mega-hit Voices Carry, written by the platinum blonde singer/songwriter, became an instant hit. Thanks, in part, to the early days of MTV, the song landed at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. With that, it was official--'Til Tuesday's popularity skyrocketed, resulting in four more Hot 100 chart hits during the rest of the 80s.
Not long after 'Til Tuesday disbanded, Mann embarked on a solo career in the early 90s with the release of Whatever. Despite the fact that she received little promotion due to her label's collapse, Mann's first solo effort garnered her the #3 spot on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and the album's lead single, I Should've Known broke the Top 20 Modern Rock Tracks chart.
In 1995, Mann, then singed with Geffen Records, released I'm With Stupid. In a bit of foreshadowing, three of the project's songs found their way onto soundtracks. That's Just What You Are was not only the album's lead single, but was also included on the soundtrack of the popular nighttime soap, Melrose Place. In 1998, Mann's Amateur was featured on the soundtrack for the Gwyneth Paltrow thriller, Sliding Doors and just a year later, in 1999, the I'm With Stupid track, You Could Make A Killing was part of the Cruel Intensions soundtrack.
Also in 1999, Mann contributed eight songs to the soundtrack of the Paul Thomas Anderson-directed, darkly imaginative film Magnolia, resulting in Grammy and Oscar nominations for the song Save Me.
Proving she was truly an artist, and not simply a recording artist, Mann set out on her own in 2000 with the indie label SuperEgo Records for her first self-release, Bachelor No. 2. In 2002, Mann released her second self-released project, Lost In Space. Once again, she beat the odds and managed to break the Top 50 peaking at #35 on the US Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. The following year, Mann released a 2-disc special edition of Lost In Space, which included her cover of Coldplay's The Scientist.
In 2005, Mann seamlessly merged her singer/songwriter talents with conceptual-art by releasing The Forgotten Arm. Next up was Mann's haunting take on holiday music with One More Drifter In The Snow. Among the classic retreads included on the unlikely holiday treat, Mann put her stamp on You're A Mean On, Mr. Grinch.
2008 saw the release of Mann's latest project, @#%&*! Smilers. Once again featuring her distinctive vocals and thoughtful lyrics, @#%&*! Smilers, and the resulting sold-out tours, reminds fans that the talented singer/songwriter is still very much at the top of her game, with or without the support of a major label.
Mann's current tour began just two weeks ago on September 13 with a three-night stint at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis. During the tour's opening night, she played a 90-minute set to a sold-out crowd. Among the near-20 songs she performed as part of the setlist was everything from Freeway from her latest studio release, @#%&*! Smilers to Stupid Thing from her debut solo project. Mann's current setlist also includes four songs from The Forgotten Arm, which she is turning into a musical. In a fan-pleasing moment, Mann is closing her shows with a few audience requests.

Thanks Jonathan, I'd let this event slip my mind. Thanks for posting and your wonderful writing.
Thanks for letting your readers know she was coming. The show was fantastic. Her cover of Harry Nilsson's One (Is the Loneliest number) made famous by Three Dog Night was incredible.
