The third season of "American Horror Story," subtitled Coven, starred multiple award-winning actresses and included several witch burnings, multiple resurrections, voodoo, slave torture, incest, gang rape, a serial axe murderer, a demon, removal of eyeballs (both self-inflicted and otherwise), cavorting with a minotaur, and even appearances by pop star Stevie Nicks. This juicy last season releases on DVD and Blu-ray on October 7, just in time to watch it again before the Freak Show (season 4) premiere on October 15.

John Carroll Lynch, who played husband to Frances McDormand's Margie in 1996's "Fargo," joins the upcoming fourth season. A leaked call sheet calls him Twisted Clown (via iHorror), while show writer Tim Minear said he'll be "one of the central core villains" and will "scare the [bleep] out of you" (in Hollywood Reporter). Guess Lynch landed the coveted role as the killer clown creator Ryan Murphy dished back in May (in ET).

Finn Wittrock, who appeared in Murphy's award-winning HBO AIDS movie "The Normal Heart," has also been recruited for Freak Show, along with newcomers Michael Chiklis (star of TV show "The Shield") and Wes Bentley (Seneca Crane in "The Hunger Games"). Here's a cast rundown, although some of the character names may be subject to change:

  • Jessica Lange as Elsa Mars, German who runs a freak show in Jupiter, Florida, in the 1950s (pic). 4th season.
  • Sarah Paulson as Bette and Dot Tattler, two-headed conjoined twins who share one body (pic). 4th season.
  • Kathy Bates as Ethel Darling, freak show performer, ex-wife to Chiklis and mother of Evan Peters. 2nd season.
  • Michael Chiklis as strongman Wendell del Toledo, husband to Angela Bassett and father of Peters. 1st season.
  • Evan Peters as Jimmy Darling, the Lobster Boy (pic), presumably based on Grady Stiles. 4th season.
  • Angela Bassett as Desiree Dupree, freak show performer, wife of Chiklis. 2nd season.
  • Denis O'Hare as Lange's enemy, a "collector" of freaks. 3rd season.
  • Frances Conroy as Matilda Hapschatt, freak show performer. 4th season.
  • Jamie Brewer as Katie. 3rd season.
  • Gabourey Sidibe as Patricia. 2nd season.
  • Emma Roberts as Maggie. 2nd season.
  • Wes Bentley as Eddie, a vengeful nemesis from Bates' past. 1st season.
  • Naomi Grossman as Pepper, her Schlitze-inspired character from season 2 (Asylum). 2nd season.
  • Ben Woolf, who played the freakish Infantata (pic) in season 1 (Murder House), as Meep. 2nd season.
  • Erika Ervin (Guinness's world's tallest professional model at over 6'7") as Amazon Eve. 1st season.
  • Christopher Neiman as Salty. 1st season.
  • Ann McKenzie as Eudora Tattler, presumable relative of Bette/Dot. 1st season.
  • Ramona Tyler as Mildred Bachman. She appeared in one episode of Coven. 2nd season.
  • Mariana Paola Vicente as Carol, she was Puerto Rico's Miss Universe candidate in 2010. 1st season.
  • Rose Siggins (pic) as Legless Suzi. 1st season.
  • Grace Gummer as Penny, the candy striper. Daughter of Meryl Streep, she played Millie in a Coven episode (pic). 2nd season.
  • Mat Fraser as Paul, the illustrated man. 1st season.

Rumors of a bearded lady haven't divulged which actress gets to don the facial hair. No official trailers or promo posters have yet been released but should be forthcoming, although fan-made posters abound. One trailer that surfaced a few weeks ago proved to be a fake (watch it here).
