Bordeaux Blast! FRIDAY SIPS

Friday, January 17, 3:30 - 6:30

Drop by to taste the three exciting red wines from France's hallowed Bordeaux region. Lots of Cabernet and Merlot will be represented

$16.99 BTL./$203.88 CASE

The region of Graves is quite important to Bordeaux, especially since its close proximity to the city itself. Beginning on Bordeaux's outskirts and extending 31 miles south it's home to luminaries like Haut-Brion and Pape Clement. What distinguishes the area are the gravelly soils. Chateau Mayne du Cros is a classic version of a wine from this area. 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot from the southern reaches of the region, it also doesn't hurt that it comes from the luscious, very formidable 2009 vintage.
Adobe-like earth, prominent mineral and subtle spice play off of a foundation of bing cherry, raspberry and a touch of dark chocolate. In the mouth it is unapologetically Bordeaux with a dry texture that moves nicely from start to finish. The depth of the vintage makes this an excellent value. Drink over the next 4-6 years.

Today's Good Value Wine Tasting is hosted by JennyRae Foreman. She will be pouring selections from France, Italy & Chile:
Domaine d'Augeron 2012 $7.99
This Southwestern French white is crisp, grassy, and refreshing. Reminiscent of a Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine d'Augeron's citrusy acidity makes it an excellent companion to sea scallops and salads in vinagrette.
Castelnuovo Custoza 2012 $7.99
A Trebianno blend from Custoza, near Verona.
Straw-yellow colored wine, with intense perfumes of fruits and flowers. Well-structured and armonic.
Vallevo Trebbiano 2012 $7.99
Pale straw in color, with aromas of almond, citrus and a hint of herbs. It is bone dry and finishes with a very attractive hint of apple-skin. This is a knockout everyday bottle of white wine, flavorful enough to stand up to a range of dishes but bright enough to make a good dry aperitif.
Casteggio Barbera 2011 $7.99
Meant to drink young, this wine bursts of red fruits like raspberry and cherry. A very easy drinking medium-weight wine with a bright, tangy finish. Barbera from nearby (and more famous) Piedmonte can sell for much more, but may not taste as delicious as this particular wine.
Santa Ema Carmenere 2009 $8.99
This wine has a deep red color with violet nuances. Its aroma consists of intense black fruits such as black and blue berries with a touch of tobacco and red bell pepper and black pepper. The well-balanced palate presents mild, ripe tannins with a pleasant and middle acidity.
Domaine de Couron Cotes du Rhone 2011 $9.99
"Light, with sandalwood and tea notes framing the lightly mulled black cherry and red currant fruit core. Singed sandalwood details echo on the finish." Best Value! Wine Spectator
Chateau Les Verrier Bordeaux 2010 $9.99
A beautiful ruby purple color. A charming and fresh nose with aromas of candied red fruits. On the palate, a nice roundness, a powerful and complimentary wine develops aromas of red fruits. A harmonious blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

New World Cabernet Sauvignon!

Written on January 14, 2014 by Bruce in Friday Flights

Gratefully back at VINO after almost two weeks away, I have to say. A two week trip that included a few days at the in-laws and then a week in Mexico nearly did us in. Colds, flus, rainy and chilly-ish tropical days, and the final indignity of being pummeled by the atrocious flying experience that is traveling on United Airlines (so atrocious that at the Cancun airport, in the midst of a 6-hour delay caused by airplane mechanical issues, I was able to rationalize a marginal-at-very-best $17 margarita from the Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville restaurant) made getting home more relaxing than being away. First world problems, I know.

In my biz if you believe what you read then you would think you have to spend way north of $50 a bottle to drink great cabernet. Not so, as the following wines will amply prove. With shining examples of the idea of bang-for-the-buck drinking from Washington, Cali, Argentina, and Chile all ready for your glasses tomorrow, you are assured of finding something to love at whatever price you can afford. I am very stoked for our upcoming flights this year, and it couldn’t start off any better than this….
-2011 AVALON Cabernet Sauvignon “California” $9.95…a staple on our shelves since their ’04 vintage, this Cali negociant bottling just does not disappoint and remains the standard bearer for excellent under-$10 cab.
-2011 BODEGAS CALLE Cabernet Sauvignon “Alberti 154″ (Argentina)$13.95
-2009 VINA KOYLE Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (Chile) $16.95
-2012 LADY HILL WINERY Cabernet Sauvignon “Procedo” (Wash.) $20.95
-2010 MARIETTA CELLARS Cabernet Sauvignon “Sonoma” $20.95…for my palate may be the best under-$25 cabernet going!
And of course further exploration will be well rewarded by our bonus pours…
Bonus #1-2010 SUSANA BALBO Cabernet Sauvignon “Mendoza” (Argentina) $24.95…92 pts-Wine Advocate
Bonus #2-2010 OWEN ROE Cabernet Franc “Rosa Mystica” (Wash.)$27.95…when we’ve had this fabulous cab franc on our shelves in past vintages it has been $42 a bottle. Owen Roe recently dropped the price down an extraordinary $14 a bottle making this a stunning buy right now!!
Bonus #3-2008 WHITE ROCK Claret “Napa Valley” $41.95…classic Californian that drinks like an $75+ bottle!

The party will get started as always at 4:30 and run til 8:00 and you are welcome to drop by anytime. It costs only ten dollars for the first five wines and the bonuses will be just a bit more, and worth it! Bring along your best drinking companions, some choice snacks, and let’s start another year of Friday fun off right!
