'Agents of SHIELD' gets season 2 pick-up, as 'Agent Carter' comes to ABC

They may be the new A-Team for the time being, but Phil Coulson and his team are still at heart Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as ABC renews the series for a second season, Deadline reports.

Picking up where Marvel's The Avengers left off following the battle of New York, the series puts Clark Gregg on the frontline as fan favorite Coulson, who heads his own team of not-so-super (kinda) heroes to investigate the strange and unknown around the world.

After a strong premiere last fall, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been struggling in the ratings due to tough competition between top-rated NCIS and Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals.

After being mostly standalone, the series found its footing -- especially during the final episodes in the aftermath of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where HYDRA rose again by secretly infiltrating SHIELD, who's now been branded a terrorist organization. Still, Coulson remains determined to be the 'SHIELD' for liberty, freedom, honor, and justice -- just like Captain America.

And speaking of the First Avenger, his lady love will be getting her own show, as ABC decides to pick-up Agent Carter as a series for the 2014-15 season with Hayley Atwell reprising her role. Set in 1946, the series will follow Carter in the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR), where she lives a double life as a secretary ... and as a spy on behalf of Howard Stark, one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D. (SSR's successor) -- and the father of Tony Stark, who will grow up to become the armored Avenger known as Iron Man.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs its freshman finale Tuesday at 8pm on ABC.
