Agent Ward: “I don’t think Thor is technically a god.”

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is one of the new shows on ABC. Beware this article contains spoilers for tonight’s pilot episode. The following paragraph will give you the bottom line, which will hopefully help you decide if this is the show for you. Be sure to check out the slideshow for more quotes from tonight’s episode. "Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs Tuesday nights at 7 on ABC (KTRK).
Here’s the bottom line of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." It’s a crime procedural where instead of typical cop or crime cases, the episodes will follow various superhero and otherworldly things. If you have seen a Joss Whedon show before, then you know what to expect. Basically there will be great banter and a focus on the ensemble. The pilot proves this. It’s a little hard to get a real sense of the team dynamic since the team is just being formed in this episode. There isn’t this built in dynamic, except with Fitz and Simmons, but it is just chaotic. This show shows a lot of potential.
There are some twists that work really well, and then there are some that aren’t hard to see coming. Michael Peterson going crazy is predictable, or well it was obvious that he wouldn’t be the do gooder for the entire episode. One of the best twists of the episode is that the woman he saved was actually the doctor who gave Michael the centipede. The writers have introduced a bad guy that can reappear in future episodes. Plus, it is hinted that the doctor did not come up with whatever is in the centipede. It was given to her. There is promise for future episodes, perhaps even a multi-episode arc involving the centipede. What was the most shocking moment for you?
Here are quick thoughts on elsewhere in the episode. As previously mentioned, it is hard to get a real sense of everyone’s character. There isn’t confusion, but the viewers don’t have too clear of an idea of who everyone is. This isn’t a huge issue, but it is something the writers will hopefully work on starting in the next episode. The big question of the pilot is what really happened to Coulson. He wasn’t in Tahiti, and it sounds like whatever happened, it is much more serious and dangerous than even Coulson knows. Do you have any theories?
