The traditional three tiers of sweets and savories at the Celtic Knot.
There are few things more civilized than the ritual of afternoon tea, but the cost of traditional teas (which usually top $30 per person), served at downtown hotels, are best suited to those with expense accounts.
But take heart: If you are willing to venture off the beaten path, and to sacrifice a bit of ambience, you can enjoy afternoon tea and at half the cost of those offered at Loop hotels!
Consider the afternoon tea served at Evanston's Celtic Knot Public House: The Celtic Knot is a pub, with decor to match, but "Moira's Afternoon Tea" (available on Wednesdays and Saturdays) features a traditional tea service of sandwiches, scones, sweets and, of course, tea, all for only $15.95 per person.
Tea-takers are offered a choice of bagged teas from Barry's, Twinings and Bigalow, along with a large pot of hot water. Patrons are then presented with three tiers of tasty treats, including sandwiches, homemade scones, strawberries, cream, jam, pastries and chocolates.
The food offerings are remarkably good: The scones (no raisins!) are light and slightly crunchy, and not too sweet. The sandwiches (egg salad, ham, and smoked salmon) were simple, but tasty, and made on good-quality bread. The sweets were well made, particularly the chocolate/caramel/walnut confections, each served in a little chocolate "teacup".
Super elegant? No. Gourmet? Hardly. But combined with the kind and unrushed service, this was a lovely little detour in my day, which left me with a full tummy and a not-entirely empty wallet. Recommended.
